Tranquebar, "The queen of the Coramandal coast"has rich tradition and aglorious past. It is the symbol of the Portuguese – Danish – French - English Heritage. The Institute of Salesian Missionaries of Mary Immaculate (SMMI) arrived Tranquebar in 1901 in order to uplift the downtrodden. St.Theresa's Convent has been travelling with the local communities since 1901. Prominently, it has provided significant education in there gi on through running of schools and we have the biggest home for children in our state having 879 children where, many very poor, deprived and destitute children stay and go to school. The girl students who complete their Higher Secondary School Education fail to pursue higher education, which is primarily owing to economic deprivation coupled with cultural factor. Most of these girls are from the poor and marginalized communities of Tharangambadi region.
Considering the plight of the above less privileged youthgirls to pursue their Higher Education, The General and hercouncil, the Provincial and her council permitted to start aCollege for women at Sathangudi, Tharangambadi.
